Sedro Woolley Announcement1

Update on high school students returning to in-person learning 5 days per week:

April 2, 2021

Dear families,

Over the past week, district leadership has discussed how to safely implement the new CDC distancing guidance in our schools. The new state DOH guidelines reflect spacing of 3 feet for most activities while students are masked. The CDC still recommends 6 feet between staff and between students and staff. It also recommends 6 feet among students in certain circumstances, such as eating and during activities when increased exhalation occurs, such as singing, shouting, band, or sports and exercise as well as in common areas such as school lobbies and auditoriums.

Following these guidelines, the Sedro-Woolley School District will welcome all K-12 students back to in-person learning five days a week beginning April 19.  Wednesday, April 14, will serve as a transition day for all students with teachers providing asynchronous learning.  In-person students will still be required to follow safety protocols: wearing masks, practicing regular hand washing, and keeping social interactions to a minimum.

The CDC guidance adopted by the DOH allows for more physical space, supporting students who choose in-person learning, while still keeping the health and safety of everyone in our buildings as our top priority. Families will continue to have a remote learning option. Buildings will provide specific updates to families in regard to any changes.

More information will be shared as decisions are made. If you have questions, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Thank you for your continued patience and partnership.

Sincerely,

Phil Brockman, Superintendent

Update on high school students returning to in-person hybrid learning March 8th:

March 8, 2021

Dear Families,

The district has been working to reopen our school buildings using a phased-in, hybrid in-person approach. We have brought back K–8 students in a slow manner, carefully monitoring our safety protocols to ensure the health and safety of students and staff.

In a similar fashion, we are going to do a phased-in model at Sedro-Woolley High School, starting with staggered, small-group ninth-grade orientation days during the next two Wednesdays (March 17 and 24). The school will be communicating specific information about the orientation days that will bring small groups of freshmen to campus before we bring back the entire school on March 25 in a hybrid model.

To help reduce the number of students in our buildings at any given time, we will split students into two groups: Cohort A and Cohort B. Cohorts have been assigned by school buildings to balance class sizes and student needs. Siblings will be in the same cohort at the elementary, middle, and high school grade levels. All students will continue to learn remotely on Wednesdays.

High school families will receive their cohort assignments from the school via email. If you have specific questions about those assignments, please contact the high school at 360-855-3510.

Cohort A in-person learning days.

Cohort B will work independently on work provided by their teachers.

Remote only student check-in with teachers

Asynchronous Support

Cohort B in-person learning days.

Cohort A will work independently on work provided by their teachers.

We will continue to offer a remote-only learning option for families who do not yet feel comfortable having their students return to school. These students have already been assigned to this option as requested in earlier surveys.

State Street High School will also bring students back to campus in a hybrid model on April 12. Families will receive more information about their student’s State Street schedule from Principal Barb Askland.

The USDA Meal Kits will continue to be provided at no cost on Wednesdays. Breakfast and lunch will also be served to students on campus at no cost through the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

High school student-athletes are participating under WIAA guidelines. Questions about athletics and COVID-19 prevention and guidelines should be directed to Athletic Director This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

As the district brings high school students back to campus, I would ask our community to continue helping us control the spread of COVID-19. Wear a mask, wash your hands, stay home when possible, and limit in-person interactions. If a school has an outbreak, we may be required by public health to move a building or class back to remote learning. Returning to a normal educational experience depends on our community being vigilant against the virus.

We will continue to post updates to our School Reopening Plan page on the district website at https://www.swsd.k12.wa.us/domain/969. Letter from Superintendent Phil Brockman on 02/02/2021:

February 2, 2021

Dear Families,

Based on the new state Department of Health guidance and revised metrics to reopen schools safely, the district has been working to reopen our school buildings using a hybrid in-person approach. Kindergarten through grade 2 students returned to school this week. Grades 3–4 are scheduled to be back in school on Monday, February 8, and grades 5–6 will return on Tuesday, February 16.

Cascade Middle School is tentatively scheduled to transition grade 7 students in a partial-day format for orientation on February 18 and 19. All middle school students are tentatively scheduled to re-open in a hybrid in-person learning model on Monday, February 22. Families will receive more detailed information from school administrators in the next few days.

Our high school staff continues to work on their respective re-opening plan, which is based on positive COVID metric rate per 1oo,000 at 225. The return-to-campus date for the high school is still to be determined.

To help reduce the number of students in our building at any given time, we will split our students into two groups: Cohort A and Cohort B. Cohorts have been assigned by school buildings to balance class sizes and student needs. Siblings will be in the same cohort at the elementary, middle, and high school grade levels. All students will learn remotely on Wednesdays.

We will continue to offer a remote-only learning option for families who do not yet feel comfortable having their students return to school. These students have already been assigned to this option as requested in earlier surveys.

Middle school families will receive their cohort assignments from their school buildings via email. If you have specific questions about those assignments, please contact your student’s building administrator or secretary at 360-855-3520.

The USDA Meal Kits will continue to be provided at no cost on Wednesdays. Breakfast and lunch will also be served to students on campus at no cost through the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

High school student-athletes are returning to practices under WIAA guidelines. Questions about practices and COVID-19 prevention and guidelines should be directed to Athletic Director Jerry Gardner. No guidance has been issued for middle school athletics, so those are currently on hold.

As the district continues to bring students back to campus, I would ask our community to help control the spread of COVID-19. Wear a mask, wash your hands, stay home when possible, and limit in-person interactions. If a school has an outbreak, we may be required by public health to move a building or class back to remote learning. Returning to a normal educational experience depends on our community being vigilant against the virus.

Update on K-2nd Grade returning to online learning November 9th:

Dear Families,

As you know from previous communications, we have been closely monitoring Skagit County’s COVID-19 infection rates, which are tracked by the Skagit Health District. During the past 10 days, rates have sharply increased and the unofficial data shows that with yesterday’s 20 new cases, we have exceeded the moderate threshold of 75 new cases per 100,000 in Skagit County placing us in the high COVID-19 Activity Level.

As outlined in the OSPI decision tree, it is strongly recommended to transition to distance learning when cases exceed 75 per 100,000. Based on being in the high COVID-19 activity level, the Sedro-Woolley School District has made the decision to return K-2 back to a remote learning environment. We want to give our staff and families this official notification so they can start planning for the shift to remote learning as early as possible. The first day of remote learning will be Monday, November 9, and will not impact student conferences. Conferences will be held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for elementary schools, which will release at 12:30 p.m. On Thursday and Friday: State Street will release at 11 a.m.; Sedro-Woolley High School will release at 11:50 a.m.; Cascade Middle School will release at 12 p.m. There will be no school on Wednesday as we honor Veterans Day.

This transition does not impact students who are on campus outside of the K-2 hybrid model due to special needs or the third- to twelfth-grade remote instruction or those K-2 students who continued in the remote learning model.

We continue to follow sound protocols aligned with expert health guidance to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect the health of our students and staff. We also want to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of wearing masks, staying six feet apart from others, and regularly washing your hands.

The primary symptoms of COVID-19 include shortness of breath, coughing, and fever or chills. Other symptoms include congestion, sore throat, diarrhea, abdominal pain, body aches, and loss of taste or smell. If you begin to experience symptoms, please consult a healthcare provider.

We will continue to keep you updated as we receive guidance and information. As we continue to track COVID-19 metrics, we will update our families about transitioning back to the hybrid-learning model as cases decrease. If you have specific questions about our remote learning model, please send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. Sincerely,

Phil Brockman, Superintendent
